Legislative Highlight: Distracted Driving

Assemblymember Daly introduced Assembly Bill 47 to address distracted driving. Currently, driving while texting can result in a small fine, but it does not adversely impact one’s driving record. This bill would elevate a distracted driving citation to the same status as other dangerous driving violations, such as speeding or running a red light.

Quick facts:

  • Distraction plays a role in 6 out of 10 teen crashes.
  • Each day in the US, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.
  • 3,450 people were killed by distracted drivers in 2016.
  • 391,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.
