Assemblymember Daly Praises Governor for Extending Use of Orange County's Armories to Shelter Homeless

For immediate release:

Sacramento- Assemblymember Tom Daly (D-Anaheim) issued the following statement in response to today's decision by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. to allow the County of Orange to continue to use two state military armories as temporary shelters for the homeless:

The armories in Santa Ana and Fullerton were scheduled to close on April 15. Following my
request to extend the closure date, Governor Brown has agreed to a 90-day extension.
Combined, these armories house 400 homeless persons during the winter season. In addition to
shelter, these facilities provide a nutritious meal, a warm shower and a safe place to sleep.

This extension allows the cities and counties more time to continue pursuing additional options
for permanent housing for the homeless. I truly appreciate the Governor’s fast response to this
request. I also appreciate the persistence of my colleague, Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-
Silva, who joined in the effort to convince the Governor to reach his decision.
